les choristes, million dollar baby, la mala educacion - in keeping with tradition
As it has been awhile I think I may aswell stick to tradition and discuss the movies I have seen. Les Choristes (The Chorus), a title I refuse to pronounce in french (simply because I always make it sound terrible), was the first one I saw after I Heart Huckabees. I have to say I absolutely love this movie it is so sweet, such a feel good movie (though the red headed guy nearly ruined it for me). I know I'm not much of a critic, the cliched phrases I use are a dead give away but I say what occurs to me.
This movie has just been added to my favourites list, the music featured also helped get it there. So I was absolutely horrified to hear Beyonce sang the song nominated from this movie at the Oscars. I didn't see her perform, but if you've seen this movie you'll already know it should never be sung by her. Why the hell did she sing any of the songs let alone more than one? Were the organisers completely high? If you have an opinion about this please I'd like to hear it. As for the winner, I can't say I remembered that song from 'The Motorcycle Diaries.' The performance of this song by Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana was the only thing I saw of the whole event (by sheer coincidence). I don't remember the song but I do remember being somewhat entranced as I just thought the whole thing was rather bizarre, that isn't a reflection of the song just that it never occurred to me Banderas would sing at the oscars.
During my absence from this blog spot I have seen Million Dollar Baby which was much better than I thought it'd be. Why is it I can't stand watching actual boxing but I like watching it in movies? The last one I saw was La Mala Educacion (Bad Education). I don't really know what to say about it. By the way it is the first Pedro Almodovar film I've seen. It isn't a film my other friends would see. It wasn't bad, but not a favourite. Mainly because of the content. The story line was good and the order the story unfolded, but as my friend said Gael Garcia Bernal's motive for doing things isn't really clear. Well that's just my amateur comment on the movies I've seen.
Out of the three I definitely recommend Les Choristes. My friend and I were extremely lucky to see it at all, it was the very last chance to see it in cinema. I now usually see arthouse films with my friend (I don't like to name people as you've noticed) as part of a little tradition. These are the hardest films to be able to later because local dvd/video rental stores only have a very small arthouse section, and if i can't rent it I have to see if by sheer luck SBS shows any films of interest, they usually do. The World Movies channel would be the best thing for me.
